Dr. McCarthy attended medical school at the University of Virginia. She completed her residency at Duke University where she was a Chief Resident. She completed her Fellowship in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at the University of North Carolina. Dr. McCarthy has served for nearly a decade as an elected officer of the Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Society of Greater Washington (CAPSGW), a local branch of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (AACAP). She has also held elected positions for the Washington Psychiatric Society WPS, The Washington area chapter of the American Psychiatric Association (APA), and is currently a Fellow of the APA. Dr. McCarthy continues to provide lectures to the residents and fellows at Georgetown University and Children's National Medical Center. She lectures regularly at local public and private schools in the Washington DC area. She has made appearances in television news shows and been quoted in national and local magazines. Dr. McCarthy has been named as a “Top Doctor” by every Washingtonian Magazine “Top Doctors” issue since 2008.
