  • Description of Services : The Adult Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder Treatment and Research Program (ADHD-TRP) at the University of Pennsylvania offers a unique approach to treating adults with ADHD and other secondary comorbid diagnoses. The goal of the Penn team is to better understand the complex presentation and pervasive nature of Adult ADHD and to subsequently develop a treatment protocol highlighting empirically validated interventions. The ADHD-TRP offers comprehensive evaluations and ongoing pharmacological and cognitive therapy for patients meeting diagnostic criteria for ADHD. Russell Ramsay, Ph.D. Associate Director, ADHD Treatment and Research Program Assistant Professor of Psychology in Psychiatry J. Russell ("Russ") Ramsay, Ph.D., is a licensed psychologist, Assistant Professor of Psychology in Psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania's School of Medicine, and a senior staff psychologist at Penn's Center for Cognitive Therapy. Since 1999, he also has served as the Associate Director of Penn's ADHD Treatment and Research Program (which he co-founded), which is dedicated to researching the distinctive effects of ADHD in adult patients and to developing effective treatments for this clinical population. Dr. Ramsay joined Penn's Adult Social Learning Disorders Program in 2004 to help in the development of diverse psychosocial treatments for adults with Asperger's Syndrome/High Functioning Autism (AS/HFA) and to collaborate on research. Dr. Ramsay earned his B.A. in psychology (with departmental honors) from the University of Miami in 1988 and his Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the Pacific Graduate School of Psychology in Palo Alto, California in 1995. He completed his predoctoral internship at CPC Behavioral Healthcare in Monmouth County, New Jersey. Dr. Ramsay went on to complete a two-year postdoctoral training program at Penn's world-renowned Center for Cognitive Therapy, where he then became a staff psychologist and, subsequently, a faculty member in Penn's medical school. Dr. Ramsay's clinical interests have focused on providing cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) for "complex" clinical problems, including adult ADHD, Bipolar Disorder, Borderline Personality Disorder, and AS/HFA. His wide-ranging research interests have focused on various aspects of improving the quality of care for adults with ADHD and, more recently, AS/HFA, including: developing more accurate diagnostic assessments, researching neuropsychological functioning in ADHD (i.e., "executive functions") and in AS/HFA (i.e., "theory of mind"), transition to adulthood for young adults/college students with ADHD, and the effectiveness of CBT, often combined with medications and/or other psychosocial treatments, for these clinical populations. Dr. Ramsay hopes to become increasingly involved in research into psychiatric genetics and studies of brain functioning using neuroimaging technology for ADHD and AS/HFA. Dr. Ramsay has authored numerous professional articles and book chapters, and has lectured internationally to mental health professionals on adult ADHD and the principles of CBT. Active in community education, he has presented at local meetings of mental health organizations (such as NAMI), and served as an invited guest on public radio and America Online. In addition to his clinical and research interests, Dr. Ramsay also provides supervision in CBT to psychiatric residents and other trainees.
