FAQ: Summer Camp Award Fund 2013
Applications for the 2013 Program are due
Wednesday, February 27, 2013.
CHADD is pleased to announce the continuation of the Summer Camp
Award Fund for children with ADHD. The program, open to children of
CHADD members only, is designed to help defray expenses
associated with attendance at eligible summer camps for children with
ADHD. The three available awards, up to $6,500 each, are payable
directly to the selected camp for tuition and to the parent or guardian
for related expenses. The CHADD Summer Camp Award Fund is made possible
by donations from Janssen Pharmaceuticals, Inc. and
Toys“R”Us Children’s Fund, Inc. Below are some
frequently asked questions about the CHADD Summer Camp Award:
Who is eligible to apply for a CHADD Award?
- Parent or Guardian applying must be a CHADD
member
- Camper must be diagnosed with ADHD
- Camper must be between the ages of 6 and 21
- Camper must be willing and able to attend an eligible camp
How do I know if I am a current CHADD member and how
can I locate my membership ID?
CHADD members receive Attention magazine on a bi-monthly
basis. If you have received a copy of Attention magazine
recently, chances are your membership is current. The easiest way to
determine if you are a current member is to log
in to the website. Upon doing so, if you are a current member, you
will see your CHADD membership ID. Please remember that the Summer Camp
Award is open to children of CHADD members ONLY. If you need to join
CHADD or renew your membership, please click
here.
Which costs will the Summer Camp Award cover?
- Camp tuition and registration (payable directly to the camp or
summer program)
- Camp fees, including medication program fees
- Camper’s travel to and from camp (any appropriate travel such
as airline or bus tickets or documented auto mileage are
acceptable)
- Required clothing and supplies, if applicable
How will Summer Camp Award recipients be
selected?
The Summer Camp Award Committee will consider several factors
highlighted on the application, including:
- Diagnostic information
- Impact of ADHD on the family
- Financial information
- Education and treatment
Will applicants be notified?
Yes, all applicants will be notified twice.
First, all applicants will receive an email confirmation that their
application was received as complete. You must provide your email
address to receive an email confirmation. Please make certain to add the
email address camp@chadd.org to your
“approved senders” list.
Then, all applicants, including recipients and those on the waiting
list, will be notified of their award status by postal letter. We hope
to have letters to every applicant by April 17, 2013.
When will awardees be notified?
Awardees will be notified by April 10, 2013, by email and by letter.
The Summer Camp Award Fund manager will directly contact all
awardees.
Is this the application for the camp, too?
No. This application is only for the CHADD Summer Camp
Award. Parents and guardians must apply to the camp of their choice
separately.
The due date for the camp application is before
February 27, 2013; should I wait to apply for camp?
No. CHADD encourages parents and guardians to apply to the camp of
their choice as early as possible to secure a place for their child.
Once applicants learn of their status as an award recipient or not, then
they may notify the camp of how they will be proceeding.
How do camps become eligible?
For a camp to be considered eligible for participation in the Summer
Camp Award program, it must have a relationship with CHADD demonstrated
by meeting one of the following criteria:
- Be recognized at an annual conference as an Innovative Program or
presented during a session at a CHADD annual conference
- Have been featured in a Promising Practices column in
Attention
- Advertised with Attention magazine within the last
year
- Exhibit at CHADD’s annual conference in 2012
- Be a current Organizational Member of CHADD
Which camps are eligible?
Click here to see a list
of eligible camps.
What if there isn’t a camp in my
city/state/region?
The eligible camp list is not an exhaustive list of camps that work
with kids with ADHD; rather it is a list of camps that are eligible to
participate in the CHADD Summer Camp Award program. CHADD does not
specifically endorse any of these camps and parents should ALWAYS
research camps to ensure that the experience will be a good fit for
their child.
We are continually adding camps to the list, but do not yet have a
camp in every state or region. Keep in mind that many of these camps are
overnight camps and are specifically trained to work with kids who may
not have much experience away from home. Please contact any camp that
you are considering to ask about how they handle kids being away from
home.
Another option to locate a camp in your area is to use the Find a
Camp link on the American Camping Association website. You can search by
many factors, including special needs, location, and cost at www.acacamps.org.
