Physician and Nursing Continuing Education

This activity is jointly sponsored by Clobal Education group and
Children and Adults with Attention deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder
(CHADD)
Target Audience
The educational design of this activity addresses the needs of
pediatricians, child psychiatrists, neurologists, family practitioners
and nurses involved in the treatment of patients with AD/HD.
Statement of Need/Program
Overview
Statement of Needs for AD/HD in Adults
Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (AD/HD) affects about 4.4% of
adults between the ages of 18 and 33 in the United States and studies
suggest that adults with AD/HD experience considerable impairment in
quality of life and in academic, occupational, and social functioning.
Furthermore, they experience high rates of comorbidities that exacerbate
their distress and make it difficult to function on a daily basis.
With increased recognition that AD/HD may be a lifelong disorder and can
significantly affect adults the American Psychiatric Association
has placed a greater emphasis on training physicians on recognizing and
treating AD/HD. Access to diagnosis and treatment is limited for adults
affected by AD/HD. Although many medication treatments are available to
manage AD/HD, much remains to clarify their efficacy and safety in
adults.
Statement of Needs for AD/HD in Children Nearly 8 percent of
all school age children age 4 to 17 years have been diagnosed with AD/HD
sometime in their lives, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention (CDC). Children with AD/HD receive much of their
care from primary care clinicians who make the initial diagnosis, manage
the child's care, and supervise treatment. Children with AD/HD use
significantly more health care services than do children who do not have
AD/HD. They have more primary care visits, more mental health visits,
and more pharmaceutical use compared with other children. With over 4
million children in the United States identified as having AD/HD and
with their need for medical services far exceeding children who do not
have AD/HD these children place a great demand on primary care
clinicians to provide what is often complicated treatment that requires
long-term management.
Educational Objectives
After completing this activity, the participant should be better
able to:
Describe the implications for clinical practice for combined
behavioral intervention and pharmacotherapy
Explain how findings from basic research can be translated to the
clinical setting, and inform our understanding of AD/HD and its
treatment.
Review data that can be used to develop treatment plans for individuals
with autism and AD/HD.
Identify the latest advances in research and
practice
Recognize the current conceptualization of AD/HD as
a neurobehavioral disorder
Identify the most effective medication
treatments.
Identify the most effective psychotherapeutic
treatments.
Describe an ideal treatment “package” or combination of
treatments
