Although individuals living with ADHD can be very successful in life,
without identification and proper treatment, ADHD may have serious
consequences, including school failure, depression, problems with
relationships, substance abuse, and job failure. Early identification
and treatment are extremely important. It was the recognition of the
seriousness of ADHD that lead the U.S. Centers for Disease Control
and Prevention (CDC) to hold a Public Health Perspective Conference
on ADHD in Atlanta in 1999. A public health research agenda was
developed that included the need to establish a national resource center
that provides accurate and valid information to the public and
professionals.
