CHADD Annual Conference (Exhibiting and Advertising)

The CHADD conference, held each year in the fall, offers educational opportunities crucial to supporting individuals facing AD/HD and to professionals who want to enhance their skills and treatment of the disorder. CHADD's conference provides value at its best, with new programs, topics and speakers. Along with continuing education credits (CEUs and CMEs), attendees can take advantage of local and global networking, professional/business opportunities and the most comprehensive trade show of AD/HD products and services.

To meet the individual needs of participants, the sessions are organized by interest group (adults, parents, educators, healthcare providers, physicians, psychologists and social workers) and by subject matter (co-existing disorders, women/girls, international/Hispanic, legal/ advocacy and complementary interventions).

There are many ways you can choose to support this effort. Some of these include:

  1. Provide a scholarship to individuals in need so they might benefit from the richness of the science-based information presented on AD/HD
  2. Advocate to teachers, community organizations, psychologists, other school personnel to attend this conference
  3. Contact your local CHADD group to advocate for attendance
  4. Donate to the conference
  5. Contact your local community foundation or other foundations in your area to support this effort
  6. Attend the conference!!

CHADD Educator's Manual and In-Service for Educators

The CHADD Educators’ Manual on AD/HD was originally published in 1992, as a publication focusing on the most current research on AD/HD as well as application strategies towards implementation of techniques in a classroom environment. The intended audience was educators, parents and other stakeholders. The manual was distributed nationally and was viewed as “the source” of information on the education of students with AD/HD. CHADD National and local CHADD chapters sold the manual to CHADD members and other stakeholders. Parents bought the manual for themselves and gave copies of it to their teachers. The initial printing was 100,000 copies. A second printing had to be ordered to meet the need. Now the information in those manuals is obsolete, and requests from parents and educators for a rewrite of the Educator’s Manual have been taken to heart. A new Educator’s Manual is now complete, after three years of extensive effort. Full dissemination to every public school in the United States has been generously funded through foundation support, the CHADD President’s Council, and other corporate and individual donors.

Also included in the foundation grant is the funding to create a teacher in-service. This in-service will be designed to teach educators how to best use the Educator’s Manual and the application of techniques outlined in the text. This in-service is being codeveloped by former CHADD president Anne Teeter-Ellison, EdD, a leading expert and researcher on AD/HD, and Chris Zeigler Dendy, lead editor on the CHADD Educator’s Manual and highly respected educational consultant and former teacher.

Additional funding to pilot this in-service in states throughout the United States is needed. Funding partners are actively being sought. If you would like to host an in-service in your area in the future please note the following options:

  1. Make a donation designated for the "Educator's Manual" or consider becoming a member of the CHADD President's Council.
  2. Host a fundraiser.
  3. Contact a local CHADD affiliate to advocate for this in-service.
  4. Contact your school district to host and support this effort.
  5. Contact your local community foundation or other foundations in your area to support this effort.
  6. Purchase one or more copies of the Educator's Manual through the CHADD Online Store.

For questions on any options to support CHADD, please contact Russell L. Shipley, Jr., Chief Development Officer, at 301-306-7070, ext. 110, or email Russ_Shipley@chadd.org.

CHADD Statewide Efforts

State and local policy makers regularly make decisions regarding education, health care, disabilities and rights that affect every person with AD/HD in the state. It is essential that evidence based information be available to guide these decisionmakers. CHADD also has members in every state with a variety of needs including: support groups, regional conferences, educations events, fundraising, school district advocacy, etc. One of the best ways to fully accomplish goals on a state by state basis is by creating state CHADD offices. Here are the key objectives to accomplish in each state.

Objectives

1. Open a state office and hire a full time coordinator.
2. Develop support groups in counties not currently served by CHADD.
3. Inform all state members about state related AD/HD issues through a state listserv.  Such issues would involve the state and county education systems, health care access, health insurance and the rights of both children and adults with AD/HD.
4. Identify state and local policy issues affecting people with AD/HD.
5. In conjunction with national CHADD staff, host briefings on AD/HD for state legislators and their staff.
6. In conjunction with national CHADD staff, offer a statewide conference on AD/HD.
7. Promote Parent to Parent:  Family Training on AD/HD classes throughout each state.
8. Host quarterly teleconferences with all State Coordinators.

This is what the CHADD National CHADD Office/Staff can contribute:

1. Our National Resource Center on AD/HD has a wealth of information on many aspects of AD/HD as well as trained specialists to assist statewide offices in providing information.
2. Guidance in the development of new support groups.  The national office already has a support group toolkit and a listserv designed to assist any volunteer interested in starting a support group.  We also have national staff to answer questions, and provide materials, flyers and local contacts.
3. Assistance with the development of a state legislator briefing. The national staff are experienced in hosting such events for both the Senate and House in Washington. National will be very involved in planning and implementing such an event.
4. Each local group also receives a dues rebate of $10 annually for each dues-paying member. These funds help to support local activities and pay for expenses. Consequently, as the local membership grows, so do funds available.
5. The Parent to Parent:  Family Training in AD/HD consists of a well-developed curriculum, teacher manual and participant manual. We have already trained 86 teachers across the country to officer the course and will be adding an additional 75 teachers each year. The national office can provide the teacher training to dramatically increase the number of people available to offer local classes
6. State Conference – The national staff are very experienced with hosting national, regional and state conferences and will provide guidance and support.

If this sounds like a project that can benefit you and your state, here are some ways you can choose to support it:

1. Donate to this effort.
2. Host a fundraiser (this is a $200,000 effort, per state, per year).
3. Contact your local CHADD group to advocate for this in your state.
4. Contact your school district to host and support this effort.
5. Contact your local community foundation or other foundations in your area to support this effort.

For questions on statewide efforts or public policy matters, please contact Cynthia Smith, MS, JD, Public Policy Specialist, at 301-306-7070 ext. 138, or email Cindy_Smith@chadd.org.

Summer Camp Scholarship Program

This scholarship program began in 2005 and was funded through corporate donations. Scholarships have been announced each summer since then to fund two to four children of CHADD members (membership is a requirement for eligibility) with AD/HD who wished to attend an eligible summer camp. This program was designed to help parents or guardians afford the expenses associated with attendance at specialty summer camps. The scholarships, which are up to $8,000 each, are payable directly to the camp for tuition and fees and to the parent for related expenses. The camps listed, although not endorsed by CHADD, do have a relationship with CHADD. The scholarship program will continue next year (funding permitted).

Parent to Parent: Family Training on AD/HD

The Parent to Parent program was developed to address the huge need for information and resources that parents can use at home, with health care providers and with the school system. The program consists of a highly developed curriculum that provides state-of-the-art information on treatment, day-to-day management, effective educational interventions, and living with AD/HD in the family. The class was developed by three mothers of children affected by AD/HD, using the vast network of CHADD’s resources, but also making sure the information was parent-friendly and reflected the “lived” experience of having a child with AD/HD. The curriculum is highly structured, using approximately 350 overhead slides (or PowerPoints) to allow teachers who are less familiar with the material to teach the class successfully. Each participant in a class receives a large notebook of materials to use at home. In addition to reading materials, there are checklists, charts, and plans that can be used with a child at home or in school. To date 126 teachers have been trained and are providing the classes in communities throughout the country.

The feedback from participants is extraordinarily positive, with comments like this one from a parent in Utah, “I was drowning and these classes have saved my life!”

1. Make a donation designated to P2P or consider becoming a member of the CHADD President's Council.
2. Host a fundraiser.
3. Contact your local CHADD group to advocate for this in your area.

Information Dissemination: At the Core of All CHADD Programs

At the heart of all CHADD programs is the focus on disseminating science-based information in order to increase public awareness, understanding, and acceptance of AD/HD, and to provide information and support to persons affected by AD/HD. One of the key programs that performs this function is the National Resource Center on AD/HD. The National Resource Center (NRC) on AD/HD is a joint program between CHADD and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) funded through a federal appropriation. The purpose of the NRC is to serve as a resource for both professionals and the public regarding what is known about the epidemiology of AD/HD and to disseminate accurate, valid information about the diagnosis of AD/HD and the availability of evidence-based interventions. The NRC was created in late 2002 with funding from the CDC. During the first year, these funds were supplemented by a small corporate grant. The staff consists of 11 professionals in health communications, social work, psychology, library and information science, and special education.

Key features of current NRC programming include:

  1. A website (help4adhd.org) that educates the public about the science of AD/HD;
  2. Highly trained information specialists who respond to inquiries about AD/HD in English and Spanish via a toll-free line or the Web;
  3. The only virtual library in the world dedicated to AD/HD and related disorders;
  4. Publications in English & Spanish available for free to the public.

During the past year, the NRC responded to more than 9,000 requests for information from individuals with AD/HD, parents of children with AD/HD, family members, and professionals, and educated more than 100,000 website visitors a month about evidence-based diagnosis and treatment of AD/HD.

Some of these may include:

1. Expanding the dissemination of AD/HD information by exhibiting at conferences for healthcare professionals, educators, and parents
2. Translation of current NRC documents into languages other than Spanish
3. Development of public service announcements on AD/HD for radio and television
4. Conference/online presentations on AD/HD to parents, teachers, healthcare professionals or policymakers
5. Expand partnership and outreach to health-related websites (WebMD, Yahoo, etc.) so that information published at these sites can be accurate and up to date.

Some ways to support this function of CHADD include:

1. Donate to this effort.
2. Host a fundraiser.
3. Contact your local community foundation or other foundations in your area to support this effort.

For questions on any options to support CHADD, please contact Russell L. Shipley, Jr., Chief Development Officer, at 301-306-7070 ext. 110, or email Russ_Shipley@chadd.org.

CHADD Public Policy

CHADD considers influencing public policy as one of its foremost efforts in terms of importance. Often policymakers are in the position to influence policy for people with AD/HD, but have limited knowledge of the disorder or its impact when making policy decisions. Often, this leads to inappropriate support structures for individuals and families dealing with this disorder. Therefore, it is critical that CHADD continue to influence policy on local, state, regional, and federal levels. Protecting the rights of people with AD/HD is a crucial and time-sensitive undertaking.

With your help, the CHADD public policy team can continue to:

  1. Meet with legislators
  2. Inform CHADD affiliates on key legislation so that appropriate action may be taken
  3. Testify at federal hearings
  4. Advocate from a policy level for all CHADD members and others with AD/HD

How can you choose to help CHADD perform this function?

  1. Donate to this effort.
  2. Communicate with CHADD public policy team on pending legislation.
  3. Monitor CHADD's position and spread the word.

For questions on matters of public policy, please contact Cynthia Smith, MS, JD, Public Policy Specialist, at 301-306-7070 ext. 138, or email Cindy_Smith@chadd.org.
